The golf course began construction beginning in 1923, and was completed in 1924.[1] The club employed the famous Olmstead brothers for landscaping and George C. Thomas Jr and and William "Billy" Bell as course architects.[1] The course was opened for play on November 15th, 1924.[2] Many varieties of trees were planted during original construction, which are now very mature and line and narrow the fairways. The land on which the course is situated is owned by the City of Palos Verdes Estates, and the club is operated under a concession agreement with the City.[3]
The clubhouse underwent a major remodel from 2005-2007, making it a popular venue for weddings with the expansive ocean views and variable capacity.[2][4][5]
The greens are a mixture of poa annua and bent grass, and the fairways are kikuyu grass.[6] The course has much change in elevation, and can be difficult for some players to walk.[7][6] Guests may play the course with a member, or may pay a public rate of $250 (including cart) with highly restricted non-member tee times available. For the dress code, denim is not allowed; a tucked-in collared shirt, belt, and slacks or Bermuda shorts are required, as are soft spikes.[2] The course sits on 214 acres of land, within an 800 acre parkland preserve, encompassing several connecting canyons and unmanicured forestland.[8]
Membership is generally restricted to residential property owners in the city of Palos Verdes Estates, CA. Membership is open to residents of neighboring cities only in the event of a dearth of demand from local residents. The club typically has hundreds of people on the waiting list for membership, which regularly takes several years to climb.[9][10]
The club is the site of the annual Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge - an invitational tournament for the top NCAA Women's Golf teams in the country.[4]
The course is a par 71, at a length of 6,313 from the black tees, 6,219 from the blue tees, 5,718 yards from the white tees, and 5,459 yards from the red tees. The men's slope ratings are 71.3/130, 70.8/129 and 68.5/124 for the black, blue, and white tees, respectively.[2][11]
The holes are generally not lengthy, but they have mature trees lining the fairways, and numerous sand traps which makes recovery from errant tee shots difficult.[6] 94 sand traps line the fairways and protect the small greens. A number of the holes (1, 2, 3, 6, 12, 13, 14) play longer than advertised, as they play into the prevailing west wind from the Pacific Ocean which is less than one mile from the course.[9] Fourteen of the course's eighteen holes feature panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean.[1]
